Over a glass of whiskey and a pipe, two old friends decided to combine their backgrounds in engineering and architecture with their shared passions for fly fishing and Moriston Rod Company was born.
Our experiences in these very different fields have given us a unique understanding of the tension and balance between form and function. Above all a fly rod must work well, and like any other tool in the hands of its master, much of its beauty comes from how well it can perform. But, although form follows function, we understand that appearances are important also. There are few things more satisfying than the perfect balance between looking good and working well.
Over the years our love for fly fishing has grown. Who could blames us when we live in Southern Oregon with world class trout and steelhead waters like the Rogue, Klamath, and Applegate rivers in our backyard.
Spey casting in particular has become such a passion that we have taken our namesake from one of its birthplaces: the river Moriston in Scotland. Currently, spey casting is seen as elite and expensive, but we want to bring this elegant and habit forming style of fishing to as many people as we can.
It was an easy choice to start with a switch rod to launch Moriston Rod Company. With its versatility and affordable pricing, the switch rod provides the best of both worlds, enabling anglers to enjoy a taste of the highly addictive spey casting while still offering the familiarity and ease of a solid one handed rod.
It is not enough to say that our rods are high quality; it is more telling to admit that we use them ourselves. We catch great fish with these rods and we are in the process of teaching our children to do the same. We strive to keep our costs down so that we can pass on the savings. Spending more money doesn’t necessarily translate into better quality, and it certainly doesn’t mean more fish.
“Do unto others as you would have them do to you”.
To most people this saying has become cliché. To us, it is still the Golden Rule that drives both our personal lives and our business etiquette. This company is the result of a long friendship and it only makes sense for us to run it on the same principles that have served us along our journey. We know that accidents happen. But don’t worry; we stand behind every rod we sell, giving you a lifetime warranty just in case the unthinkable occurs. Have a question or a concern? Let us know. We’ll be here!
